Community invited to Meet Presidential Candidates

Six finalists for the position of President at Independence Community College will be visiting Independence this week and the public is invited to a series of community breakfasts at the college to welcome them to Southeast Kansas and learn more about them. The Breakfasts will be held from 7:30-8:30 on May 25-27.

The free continental breakfasts and the candidates attending having been announced as: Wednesday, May 25th, Ms. Dixie Schierlman and Dr. Michael Calvert; Thursday, May 26th, Dr. Daniel Barwick and Dr. Michael Ash; and Friday, May 27th, Dr. Ralph Ford and Dr. Ben DeSpain.

Continental breakfast will include free coffee, juice, pastries, and fruit. Each morning, one candidate will be the Fireside Room, the other the Board Room, and members of the public will be encouraged to visit each area. No reservation is required for the free breakfast and the public is welcomed and encouraged to attend and meet the candidates for this important college and community position.

Below are the brief bios of the six presidential candidates in order of their Independence visits.


Ms. Dixie Schierlman
Ms. Dixie Schierlman currently serves as the Associate Dean of Student Life and the Director of College Advancement at Kansas State University in Salina, Kansas since 2003. Prior to her current position she served as Dean of Student Services at Independence Community College from 2000-2003. She also served the College as the Associate Dean of Student Services from 1995-1999, Director of Admissions, Registration and Student Programs from 1993-1995, and Continuing Education Coordinator from 1990-1993. Ms. Schierlman earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Education and a Masters Degree in Community College Education at Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, Kansas.

Dr. Michael Calvert
Dr. Michael Calvert currently serves as the Dean of Butler Learning Centers at Butler Community College in El Dorado, Kansas. Prior to his current position, he served the College as Associate Dean at Butler of Andover from 1996-1998, Interim Dean of the Advanced Technology Center in 2009, and Interim Vice-President for Academics at the College in 2010. Dr. Calvert received a Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education at Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa. He earned a Masters Degree in Physical Education at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, South Dakota and he earned a Doctorate in Educational Administration at Oklahoma State University.

Dr. Daniel W. Barwick
Dr. Daniel W. Barwick currently serves as Director of Institutional Advancement at Alfred State College and Executive Director of the Alfred State College Development Fund, Inc. in Buffalo, New York. Prior to his current position, he served the College as Interim Director of Corporate Relations and as a Corporate Development Specialist from 2005-2007, Assistant to the Vice-President for Academic Affairs and Assistant to the Director of Records and Institutional Research from 2004-2005, Grants Assistant to the Dean of the School of Management and Engineering Technologies from 2003-2004 and Interim Coordinator of Assessment from 2000-2003. Dr. Barwick received a Bachelor’s Degree in Philosophy at the State University of New York in Geneseo, New York. He earned a Masters Degree in Philosophy at the University of Iowa and a Ph.D. at the State University of New York in Buffalo, New York.

Dr. Michael Ash
Dr. Michael Ash currently serves as the Executive Assistant to the President for Resource Development and External Affairs at State Fair Community College in Sedalia, Missouri. Prior to his current position, he also served the College as Vice President for Institutional Advancement and Resource Development from 2009-2010 and as Vice President for Student Services and Institutional Effectiveness from 2003-2009. Before coming to State Fair Community College, Dr. Ash served Regent University, in Virginia Beach, Virginia as Vice President for Student Services from 2000-2002, Director of Student Services from 1991-2000, and as Director of Counseling from 1990-1991. Dr. Ash earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Oral Roberts University, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, a Masters Degree in Counseling from Tulsa University, and a Doctorate in Higher Education Administration from The George Washington University in Washington, DC.

Dr. Ralph L. Ford
Dr. Ralph L. Ford currently serves as Vice President of Student Services at Union County College in Cranford, New Jersey since 2005. Prior to his current position he served as Dean of Enrollment Management and Student Services at Odessa College in Odessa, Texas from 1997-2005. He also served as a Psychology Instructor at Odessa College from 1997-2005. Dr. Ford received a Bachelor’s Degree in English and Social Science at the University of West Alabama in Livingston, Alabama. He earned a Masters Degree in Educational Leadership at the University of Alabama in Birmingham, Alabama. He earned a Doctorate in Higher Education and Educational Psychology at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

Dr. Ben C. DeSpain
Dr. Ben C. DeSpain currently serves as the Assessment Dean and Dean of the Keokuk Campus at Southeastern Community College in Keokuk, Iowa. Prior to his current position he served as a Consultant, Vice President, Interim President, and briefly as President at the American College of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine in Houston, Texas from 2007-2010. He served as a Founding Head of the Department of Leadership and Counseling at Prairie View A&M University from 2004-2008. He served as President of Life University in Marietta, Georgia from 2003-2004. Dr. DeSpain has served in several additional leadership positions at various institutions. Dr. DeSpain earned a Bachelor’s Degree in History and Speech at Oklahoma Baptist University. He earned a Masters Degree in Secondary Administration at Arkansas State University. He earned a Doctorate in Community College and Higher Education at the University of Memphis.
