One hundred and fifty-two students earned academic recognition for their work during Spring Semester 2011 at Independence Community College and have been awarded honor roll status. The President’s Honor Roll requires a grade point average (GPA) of 4.0 while carrying a minimum of 12 credit hours. The honor of being a Presidential Scholar was awarded to 80 of ICC’s top academic students.

Correll Selected to Present at National Entrepreneurial Event
The National Association for Community College Entrepreneurship (NACCE) has invited Jim Correll, Independence Community College Successful Entrepreneur Program Facilitator and Business Coach, to present at the 9th Annual NACCE Conference. The event will be held October 9-12 at Portland, OR.
A special extended breakout session will be shared by four related presentations. Correll will present ‘Create a Community Non-Profit for Flexibility in Helping Business of All Types with Incubation’. The presentation is based on Correll’s work in helping create the non-profit Innovative Business Resource Center (IBRC). IBRC works to incubate and mentor businesses in Southeast Kansas helping start-ups, reinventions or growing businesses get the support they need for success in today’s changing marketplace.
“A key concept making IBRC different than most incubation programs is the mission to help businesses,” said Correll. “We try to help businesses with the knowledge and mentoring they need. With incubation, we look for the best place to set up the business and work with property owners to provide rent incentives in return for qualified incubation clients with a high probability of success.”
“Our goal is not to fill a particular building or area of a town,” continued Correll. “IBRC is not about economic development nor is our goal to create jobs. Our only goal is to help businesses succeed. The crux of the NACCE presentation will be about the incredible flexibility afforded us as a result or creating a non-profit organization with the sole purpose of helping businesses.”
NACCE is an organization dedicated to helping colleges gain new ideas, strategies and tactics that will enhance the development and expansion of their entrepreneurship programs and collaborations within their communities. The annual conference serves as a means to hear from respected community college professionals, professional presenters and entrepreneurs, as they provide content and discussion topics that will impact community college entrepreneurship programs and community business development initiatives.

Community invited to Meet Presidential Candidates
Six finalists for the position of President at Independence Community College will be visiting Independence this week and the public is invited to a series of community breakfasts at the college to welcome them to Southeast Kansas and learn more about them. The Breakfasts will be held from 7:30-8:30 on May 25-27.
The free continental breakfasts and the candidates attending having been announced as: Wednesday, May 25th, Ms. Dixie Schierlman and Dr. Michael Calvert; Thursday, May 26th, Dr. Daniel Barwick and Dr. Michael Ash; and Friday, May 27th, Dr. Ralph Ford and Dr. Ben DeSpain.
Continental breakfast will include free coffee, juice, pastries, and fruit. Each morning, one candidate will be the Fireside Room, the other the Board Room, and members of the public will be encouraged to visit each area. No reservation is required for the free breakfast and the public is welcomed and encouraged to attend and meet the candidates for this important college and community position.

Ms. Dixie Schierlman
Ms. Dixie Schierlman currently serves as the Associate Dean of Student Life and the Director of College Advancement at Kansas State University in Salina, Kansas since 2003. Prior to her current position she served as Dean of Student Services at Independence Community College from 2000-2003. She also served the College as the Associate Dean of Student Services from 1995-1999, Director of Admissions, Registration and Student Programs from 1993-1995, and Continuing Education Coordinator from 1990-1993. Ms. Schierlman earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Education and a Masters Degree in Community College Education at Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, Kansas.
Dr. Michael Calvert
Dr. Michael Calvert currently serves as the Dean of Butler Learning Centers at Butler Community College in El Dorado, Kansas. Prior to his current position, he served the College as Associate Dean at Butler of Andover from 1996-1998, Interim Dean of the Advanced Technology Center in 2009, and Interim Vice-President for Academics at the College in 2010. Dr. Calvert received a Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education at Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa. He earned a Masters Degree in Physical Education at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, South Dakota and he earned a Doctorate in Educational Administration at Oklahoma State University.

Dr. Daniel W. Barwick currently serves as Director of Institutional Advancement at Alfred State College and Executive Director of the Alfred State College Development Fund, Inc. in Buffalo, New York. Prior to his current position, he served the College as Interim Director of Corporate Relations and as a Corporate Development Specialist from 2005-2007, Assistant to the Vice-President for Academic Affairs and Assistant to the Director of Records and Institutional Research from 2004-2005, Grants Assistant to the Dean of the School of Management and Engineering Technologies from 2003-2004 and Interim Coordinator of Assessment from 2000-2003. He served as a Founding Head of the Department of Leadership and Counseling at Prairie View A&M University from 2004-2008. He served as President of Life University in Marietta, Georgia from 2003-2004. Dr. DeSpain has served in several additional leadership positions at various institutions. Dr. DeSpain earned a Bachelor’s Degree in History and Speech at Oklahoma Baptist University. He earned a Masters Degree in Secondary Administration at Arkansas State University. He earned a Doctorate in Community College and Higher Education at the University of Memphis.

ICC and K-State Sign 2+2 Agreements
Veterinary Technology and Business majors at Independence Community College will be able to slide seamlessly into bachelor degree programs at Kansas State University when College officials sign a 2+2 agreement May 24th. The agreement will define the acceptance of graduating ICC students into general business programs and ICC’s Vet Tech students into the Technology Management degree program.
K-State officials will be on ICC’s main campus on Tuesday, May 24th, in the Administration Office Building at 1:15 p.m. Signing the agreement on behalf of ICC will be Travis Githens, Interim Dean of Instruction. All faculty, staff and community members are encouraged to join the celebration.
Special guests from Kansas State will include: Sue Maes, Dean of the Division of Continuing Education; Anand Desai, Assistant Dean of the College of Business; Barb Newhouse, Assistant Dean of the Division of Continuing Education; Don Von Bergen, Arts and Science Department Head, K-State Salina; Ron Jackson, Business Program Coordinator – DCE; Rachel Schafer, Bachelor's Degree Completion Program Academic Advisor; and Jennifer Pfortmiller, Affiliate Site Manager K-State Division of Continuing Education.
2+2 articulation agreements with four-year universities honor ICC’s general education courses and conferred degrees when sophomore students consider transferring to a university for their junior and senior years. Degree Completion Programs are also available for students’ use in completing a degree; many of the courses are provided on the ICC campus or presented on-line.
In addition to K-State, ICC transfer equivalencies have been established with Emporia State University, Fort Hays State University, Pittsburg State University, the University of Kansas, and Wichita State University.

ICC Honors Tradition and Excellence at Annual Dinner
Years of service and institutional contributions were lauded Friday night as the Independence Community College faculty, staff and Board of Trustees gathered for ICC’s Annual Employee Recognition Dinner in the Community Room at ICC West. Special guests of honor were William J. Kelly, Municipal Judge and 2011 Outstanding ICC Alumnus, his wife, Theresa.
Dr. Daniel Bain, ICC President, officiated over festivities for employees and Board of Trustees Members and guests.
During the awards ceremony, Carlene Smith, Professor of English, was recognized for her 37 years of service to the College and the students of ICC with a special pictorial tribute by her co-educators in the computer sciences. Kay Ackerson, Media Center Supervisor, was honored for her 15 years of dedicated service to the institution. Ms. Ackerson has been the sponsor and organizer of ICC’s annual high school Competition Day for a number of years. Both were recognized on their upcoming retirements and received plaques commemorating the important work they’ve accomplished as part of the ICC family.
Anniversary acknowledgements were made and a staff member recognized for twenty years of service to the institution was Sonja Conley, ICC’s Registrar. Ten-year milestone awards were presented to: Larry Bale, Professor of Mathematics; John Eubanks, Professor of Business/Accounting; Beverly Harris, Executive Assistant to the President; Sylvia Diffey, Accounts Payable Accountant; Mary Sutton, Administrative Assistant to Upward Bound; Mario Lopez, Director of Maintenance; and Peter Ellenstein, Artistic Director of the William Inge Center for the Arts.

During the awards ceremony, Carlene Smith, Professor of English, was recognized for her 37 years of service to the College and the students of ICC with a special pictorial tribute by her co-educators in the computer sciences. Kay Ackerson, Media Center Supervisor, was honored for her 15 years of dedicated service to the institution. Ms. Ackerson has been the sponsor and organizer of ICC’s annual high school Competition Day for a number of years. Both were recognized on their upcoming retirements and received plaques commemorating the important work they’ve accomplished as part of the ICC family.
Anniversary acknowledgements were made and a staff member recognized for twenty years of service to the institution was Sonja Conley, ICC’s Registrar. Ten-year milestone awards were presented to: Larry Bale, Professor of Mathematics; John Eubanks, Professor of Business/Accounting; Beverly Harris, Executive Assistant to the President; Sylvia Diffey, Accounts Payable Accountant; Mary Sutton, Administrative Assistant to Upward Bound; Mario Lopez, Director of Maintenance; and Peter Ellenstein, Artistic Director of the William Inge Center for the Arts.
Five-year anniversary honorees were recognized as: Brenda Sanchez, Professor of English/Writing; Tony Turner, Head Women’s Basketball Coach; Jynell McCollam, Cosmetology Instructor; Jim Correll, Entrepreneur Facilitator/Mentor; and Debbie Phelps, Director of Institutional Effectiveness and Retention.

ICC Graduation Celebration Set for Saturday, May 7th
Independence Community College’s 2011 Graduation Ceremony is being held Saturday, May 7th. The event will be held at 10:00 a.m. in downtown Independence at the Memorial Hall. Highlights of the ceremony include addresses by ICC’s 2011 Outstanding Alumnus William J. Kelly, Municipal Court Judge and local attorney, and sophomore Christopher Simwinga.
“We are very excited to put together the program and celebrate the accomplishments of our graduates during their academic careers,” said Max VanLaningham, ICC Dean of Student Services. “My staff and I enjoy our students and it will be sad to say ‘Good-bye’ to this class but we’re proud of what they have accomplished and we know they will be equally successful after the graduation.”
Students earning recognition during the ceremony for their outstanding academic achievement include five sophomores who have been exemplary examples of student success. Abiy Ghirmay, Jennifer Middleton, Christopher Simwinga, Kristi Welch and Xiaxhi Zhang will all be recognized with the coveted Ralph Pearson Scholarship Award. The Dr. Richard M. Taylor Award for Most Inspirational Student will be announced during the morning’s presentations.
