William Kelly named ICC’s Outstanding Alumna 2011

Independence Community College’s 2011 Graduation Ceremony will be celebrated on Saturday, May 7th. ICC’s spring commencement will be held at 10 a.m. at Memorial Hall in Independence. Highlights of the ceremony include an address by ICC’s 2011 Outstanding Alumnus William J. Kelly. President Dr. Daniel A. Bain will preside over the ceremonies with the ICC Board of Trustees; Travis Githens, Interim Dean of Instruction; and Max VanLaningham, Dean of Students; and Karen Roush, faculty member and Phi Theta Kappa Sponsor. The featured student speaker will be Christopher Simwinga, the 2011 Ralph Pearson Scholarship Award Winner.

The graduation festivities will be followed by a post–commencement reception. The public is welcome to attend the celebration with the graduates and their families, faculty and honored guests.

William J. Kelly was born in 1950 at Independence, KS. He attended local schools graduating from St. Andrew’s Catholic School in 1964 and Independence High School in 1968. Following his graduation from Independence Community College in 1970, he attended Pittsburg State University, graduating in 1972. He was admitted to Washburn University School of Law at Topeka and as a student there was employed by the Kansas Revisor of Statutes as a law clerk. He graduated from law school in 1975 and returned to Independence to practice law. In 1975 he established the Kelly Law Office and has continued to practice law since that time. For over 30 years, Kelly has served as Municipal Court Judge and is currently serving as Municipal Court Judge for the cities of Independence and Neodesha.

Kelly and his wife, Theresa, a native of Topeka, were married in 1974 at Assumption Catholic Church in Topeka. They have five adult children and seven grandchildren.

ICC Sports Award Assembly Set for May 5th

Independence Community College honors the accomplishments of the Pirate Student Athletes on May 5th at the annual Sports Awards Assembly and Dessert Buffet. The event is scheduled for Thursday, May 5, in the Community Room of ICC West, located at 2615 W. Main.

During the celebration the College’s athletic teams and their respective student athletes will be recognized for their contributions to the ICC athletic programs. Awards for individual outstanding performance will be presented by the coaches.

The evening will begin at 7:00 p.m. when the dessert buffet, featuring an array of desserts, opens. The recognition assembly will follow shortly thereafter.

The public is invited to participate in both the dessert buffet and the ceremony. Advance tickets for the dessert buffet are $5.00 and will be available through the Athletic Department by calling Rita Carinder at 332-5481 or emailing rcarinder@indycc.edu. Advance reservations are needed to maintain a count for planning the desserts.
