Reservations now being accepted for Pirate Preview Day

Reservations for Independence Community College’s Pirate Preview Day are now being accepted. Pirate Preview Day for high school seniors and their parents will be held on ICC’s main campus on Friday, March 11th from 10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. An optional Financial Aid Workshop is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. All interested seniors and parents are invited to attend and each attending student will be awarded a $100 scholarship for use in Fall 2011 classes.

Events of the day include meeting faculty members and learning about ICC’s academic programs, student organizations and activities, campus tour, information about student support services and student organizations and activities. A scavenger hunt will also be conducted and prizes will be awarded. Lunch will be provided for participants and their parents.

Pirate Preview Day is a way for students and their families to learn about ICC’s many academic programs, learn the ins and outs of financial aid and apply now for fall scholarships, while boosting students confidence as they prepare for their college experience.

Instructors will be on hand to meet the guests, pass out departmental information and to answer any questions that students/parents may have. Departments and organizations participating include: Student Support Services, Admissions, The Inge Center for the Arts, Library Services, Fine Arts, Vet Tech Program, Financial Aid, Communications, Foreign Languages, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, the ICC Student Ambassadors, Athletics, Academic Advising, Housing, Freshman Seminar, Fusion and the Business Office.

Advanced Training Available for Working EMTs beginning March 1st

Advanced Emergency Medical Tech training is being offered at Independence Community College beginning March 1st. The three-month class opens the door for additional earning potential for licensed EMTs seeking increased skills and training for job advancement.

This course includes instruction in IV therapy, blood draws, and advanced airway skills along with additional leadership skills in the field of pre-hospital emergency care. The course includes 30 hours of clinical application at EMS and the hospital. Successful completion will allow the student to challenge the Kansas State Registry Exam. Students must hold a current EMT certification to enroll in this class.

Sue Manning will instruct the six-credit hour class on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:00-10:00 p.m. from March 1st, through June 2nd. Classes will meet in the EMT Classroom at ICC West, 2615 W. Main, in Room ICCW105.

The ICC’s EMT program completers have an excellent pass rate with 100% for Advanced EMT and a 90% state board pass rate for the EMT training. For more information, call Denise Clark, Allied Health Coordinator, at (620) 332-5498.
